Lough Neagh: The Perfect Storm Creating an Ecological Disaster (Briefing Paper)

Date of Publication: August 2023

The briefing paper addresses the causes and potential long-term solutions to the blue-green algae pollution in Lough Neagh, which also impacts hundreds of other rivers, freshwater environments, and even coastal areas in Northern Ireland. The blue-green algae blooms in Lough Neagh are not new, but it is becoming more frequent and more severe. The ongoing scientific research shows that this tackling this issues is not a simple matter of implementing a few localised measures but a complex challenge that requires large-scale, multi disciplinary, and multi sectoral solutions at a whole catchment scale.
